starting speech therapy has never been easier.

Play on Words Speech Therapy is a pediatric speech therapy practice, offering services conveniently in-home or in community. We specialize in treating speech sound disorders, language delays, receptive-expressive language disorders, and literacy. Sessions are individualized to each child, and often we utilize child-led and play-based activities to make therapy meaningful, motivating, and fun! We also work closely with families to educate and support, providing useful strategies for carryover and growth between sessions.

Hey there!

I’m Laura.

owner and lead speech-language pathologist

Laura D’Surney is an ASHA-certified and Virginia-licensed speech-language pathologist. Laura graduated from James Madison University with her Bachelor’s in 2018 and with her Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology in 2020. She has been practicing exclusively in pediatrics throughout her career.

Laura’s goal in starting Play on Words Speech Therapy is to offer expert speech therapy services that are individualized to each child. Laura loves incorporating play-based or highly motivating activities to make speech therapy meaningful and fun for the child. She is a firm believer that a speech therapist should be passionate about learning and treating your child’s unique need areas to ensure the best therapeutic fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • At this time, we are private pay only. Sessions are ‘fee for service,’ meaning payment is due at the time of therapy. We can provide a “super bill,” which you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. We recommend that you contact your insurance company to determine your reimbursement. POW does not contact your insurance provider.

  • Services are conveniently provided in-home at this time, so we come to you! We can also see your child at a community location, like their preschool or daycare. Current geographic areas include: Glen Allen, Short Pump, Henrico, and Richmond, VA. If you have questions about if we service your location, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

  • Utilizing private pay services allows therapy to be highly individualized to each client. Insurance will not dictate the frequency, duration, or goals recommended for your child. With private pay, there are no insurance denials, and we are always transparent about billing. There will never be any surprise bills!

  • Appointments must be cancelled at least 24 hours prior to scheduled appointment time via text, call, or email. Appointments cancelled within 24-hour frame are subject to a late cancel fee, which is the cost of the session. However, we understand that unexpected or unpredictable events can happen, so we offer one free late-cancel every 3 months.

Laura is a great speech therapist! My son saw her for 2+ years and would look forward to his sessions with Laura as she always incorporated play-based activities to make learning fun and motivating for him! She individualized each plan to fit the unique needs of the child she worked with, and has a wealth of knowledge to support your child's success.
