Frequently Asked Questions
Do you accept insurance?
At this time, we are private pay only. Sessions are ‘fee for service,’ meaning payment is due at the time of therapy. Rates are available on our Services page. We can provide a “super bill,” which you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. We recommend that you contact your insurance company to determine your reimbursement and coverage. Play on Words Speech Therapy does not contact your insurance provider for you.
What are the benefits of private pay?
Utilizing private pay services allows therapy to be highly individualized to each client. Insurance will not dictate the frequency, duration, or goals recommended for your child. There are no limits to amount of sessions. With private pay, there are also no insurance denials, and we are always transparent about billing. There will never be any surprise bills!
Where are services provided?
Services are conveniently provided in-home at this time, so we come to you. We can also see your child at a pre-determined community location, like your child’s daycare or preschool.
What locations do you service?
Since we are a mobile practice, we do have to take distance into consideration to optimize scheduling and travel time between clients. Play on Words Speech Therapy is centrally located in Short Pump, Virginia (zip 23059), and we are able to service a 10-15 mile radius around our central location, which includes areas of Glen Allen, Henrico, West End of Richmond, and Hanover, Virginia.
If you have questions about if Play on Words Speech Therapy services your location, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
What is your cancellation policy?
Appointments must be cancelled at least 24 hours prior to scheduled appointment time via text, call, or email. Appointments cancelled within 24-hour frame are subject to a late cancel fee, which is the cost of the session. However, we understand that unexpected or unpredictable events can happen, so we offer one free late-cancel every 3 months.
What can I expect from an evaluation?
An evaluation varies depending upon the area of concern (speech, language, and/or reading), as well as the age of the child. We ask that at least one primary caregiver be present during the evaluation. Tasks vary but typically involve: parent report, observation of the child during conversation or play, and an assessment. An assessment looks at the child’s skills in the area of concern. Again, tasks vary but may involve the child naming and/or identifying pictures, answering questions, etc. A complete evaluation may take anywhere from 45-90 minutes, but on average takes 60 minutes.
Following the evaluation, a report will be written analyzing the results, and your child will be scheduled for ongoing therapy. If the child qualifies for therapy, a treatment plan will be made, listing the recommended frequency and therapy goals. Therapy goals may be subject to change as the therapist becomes more familiar with your child or as goals are met.
What can I expect from a therapy session?
Sessions are intended to be 1:1 therapist and child. We ask that household distractions be limited to the best of your ability during our scheduled appointment time. Therapy is often conducted on the floor or at a tabletop, depending upon the child’s age or skills being targeted. Sessions may consist of a variety of different activities to target goals: toys, games, worksheets, books, digital activities, etc.
Parent/caregiver involvement in session is not required; however, we ask that a caregiver be present in the household during the therapy session, as well as a caregiver be available during the last 5 minutes of the appointment to receive a report and/or any education on carryover strategies or homework assignments.
